Throughout December we’ll be showcasing work from across the community in a retrospective project dubbed “My Top 3 2018”. Thomas Eriksson (@tuskenmilkbar) is up next in our series sharing his personal favourites from 2018 along with a few reason behind why he chose them. Its over to Thomas to introduce their selection :
This is my contribution to The 100 Project magazine that was released earlier this year. I really like these Star Wars the Black Series figures and wanted to catch them celebrating in the evening around a fire somewhere in the Jundland Wastes. I did spend a little more time planning and shooting this scene than I normally do, and I’m very happy with how it turned out, especially the lighting. It’s also kind of a remake from an older, indoor, shot of mine so I really wanted this to be better but also a bit different and I think I managed to do that.
I love the NECA Pennywise figure and I also really enjoyed the movie, so I’ve had a lot of fun with this figure this year. I wanted to recreate this scene from the movie and it’s a pretty simple setup and shot but the hard part was to get the hair right, so that it didn’t cover too much of his face and most importantly the eyes. I used a mask of Pennywise that has red hair and slowly moved some of the hair in front of him while shooting, to get that look of him appearing from behind. And it took a LOT of shots to get it right, but I’m really happy with the result.
When I started planning and working on this shot I knew what I wanted, but often you never know exactly how it’s going to turn out for different reasons. It could be the setup, the lighting or the posing or you just get stuck for some other reasons. Sometimes though, you get a photo that’s even better than you imagined it to be. Some kind of magic happens and, for me, this is one of those moments. This is one of the photos I’m most happy with all of my work.
