Sideshow showed off one of its SDCC 2018 exclusives this week, and the reveal might have rubbed some collectors the wrong way. I say this because the revealed exclusive is a “Dark Side” version of the recently released Revenge of the Sith Anakin Skywalker Hot Toys 1/6th scale figure, so some collectors who just bought the standard version may be a bit bent that an exclusive variant is releasing only a few weeks from the pricey figure they just secured. I for one did just get the standard Anakin from Hot Toys, and he’s an excellent figure, so I’m a bit bummed about this exclusive, because it does feature a rather awesome head sculpt, but quite frankly, with some digital editing know-how, it won’t be too difficult to make my version have the yellow dark side eyes that the exclusive version features.
That’s not the only change in the exclusive variant though, because it does come with a pretty cool base and an additional lightsaber blade that looks like it’s in motion. The base will be styled after the lava droids Anakin and Obi-Wan rode on Mustafar, and it will have LEDs like one of Anakin’s lightsaber attachments. All of the other accessories are identical to those that shipped with the standard version though.
There’s one other kicker about this exclusive that may be getting collectors’ panties in a bunch, and that’s the fact that it can only be picked up at SDCC. So even if you wanted one you have to have a pass for the show, or at least a really good friend who is going that would be willing to pick it up and ship it to you.
I’m not one to get that upset over exclusives, I mean that’s what they are and you have to jump through hoops to get them, but I do think this particular one was just poor timing. Hot Toys could have waited until NYCC, or even sometime in 2019 to drop a variant of Anakin, which is literally just now shipping to those who pre-ordered, and he’s still listed as a pre-order on the site, so it does seem a bit too soon to offer up a new version for those who already dropped the cash to buy the standard.
