Exclusive shoot by David Schrader
Our story begins after the fall of the Empire at Endor. The Empire is on the run, leaderless and scattered. Many troops have gone underground as the Rebel forces take control of the galaxy. After years of bickering amongst the Imperial Hierarchy and a series of defeats at the hands of the Rebels, the Empire is nothing more than groups of isolated troops cut-off from real leadership. Many of the troops are left to fend for themselves while a strategy is formulated. Resupply raids and small hit and run missions become common throughout the galaxy. Despite this the Empire remains underground, with many losing faith that there will ever be an Empire again…
One night while a squad of troops on a backwater planet gather for warmth around a fire, a droid approached them. A black R2-Q5 unit wanting to speak to the leader. Thinking nothing of it the leader took the droid aside to see what the fuss was about. The droid handed him something he hadn’t seen in years, official orders from the Empire. He just starred at them while he tried to think of the last time he received actual orders. This was interrupted by the droids beeping, snapping back to the present he took the orders and thanked the droid. He went back to the fire and read the orders; ‘It is time to resurface and take back the galaxy!..’
Word of the Resurfacing spread quickly, but the droids could only do so much. Many troops were sent out to find and gather stragglers and isolated units whom the droids couldn’t reach. There was excitement amongst the troops, an energy that had been absent for too long. This could be the turning point, everything had to go to plan, but with so many moving parts the plan could fall apart before it began. Doubt began to creep in amongst some of the units…
The date of the Resurfacing arrived and the Empire prepared to strike at multiple Rebel facilities simultaneously. The tension was unbearable, the stakes high and little in the way of reinforcements had arrived. Until the 11th hour when AT-AT Walkers arrived from the Imperial fleet at many strategic locations. It was time to take back the galaxy…
The attacks took the Rebels mostly by surprise with many being over quickly. Others facilities were better defended and the battle was long and brutal. The Imperial forces were hungry for battle and never wavered from the task, it felt good, like old times. After pushing the Rebels back for the first time in years and gaining key facilities to push forward, the Empire was something to fear again.
After the victory, many troops felt that the difference had been the planed strategy which brought them all back into one fighting force. This felt like a new chapter and none would forget where they were when they received the First Order.
So that’s my version of Resurface. I love this theme, as soon as I read it I had heaps of ideas. However, I took way too many photos and found it difficult to just use 5. As always, the ambition in my head is far bigger than what I can currently depict photographically.
I pushed myself to use forced perspective and try new lighting techniques to bring these figures to life. I’m very happy with all the photos but my favourite is the first one with the droid, the opposite of Leia and R2.
Hope you enjoyed my Photos and story, more of my work can be found on my Instagram page under the username @schnijder_berry.
Big thank you to Jack and the team at Exclucollective for the opportunity to do a themed shoot again.
