“Don’t call me a mindless philosopher, you overweight glob of grease”. – C3PO
That is one of many names given to the famous Astromech droid by his best friend – C3PO. These droids have been through thick and thin, seen the rise and fall of the Empire and will once again be seen in the upcoming The Last Jedi come December. I’ve finally got my hands on a 1:12 scale R2-D2 action figure last week. This version of the brave and resourceful Astromech droid comes from Bandai’s S.H. Figurarts line. R2-D2 and C3PO are the latest characters being brought to action figure form by S.H. Figurarts and they are based on the movie version of the droids from A New Hope. So far they have released versions of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca from that movie. So, let’s take a closer look at R2-D2 and see if this is the definitive 1:12 scale droid that we’re looking for to add to our collection.
What’s In The Box
- R2-D2 figure
- Alternate legs covers
This R2-D2 doesn’t come with many accessories as compared to other Star Wars characters that were released under the S.H. Figuarts line. We only get alternate leg covers which I think are supposed to be the leg covers which were hiding Kenny Baker’s leg when he portrayed the droid in A New Hope. Kudos to SH Figurarts for being movie accurate with this figure!
Sculpt wise, I think he’s perfect! I love the colors on this figure, it really pops. The panel lines on the body, where all the grooves have a darker side to it which brings out the details on the figure. The knobs and lights on head looks really good and nicely done.
Going down to it’s body, the ventilation holes on the front and back are well executed. The copper wires on it’s legs are nicely sculpted as well. SH Figurarts has done a perfect job in sculpting and flashing out every detail on their version of R2D2 which is great since we’re not getting a lot of accessories. So, I dare say that we’re getting our money’s worth on an impressive detailed figure that is lacking in terms on accessories that comes with the package.
PAINT APPLICATION 10/10
The paint job is excellent on this figure. I love the fact that the body is not painted shiny white but it has a cream color to it and this adds to the movie accuracy of a droid making it’s way in the sands of Tatooine. Moving down to its legs, you can find that they’re painted in shiny metallic blue & also silver color. You also find that the body is painted in metallic blue and silver too. The silver color on the dome looks really good as well.
The wires on both legs are painted copper and there’s a bit of a dirt and grime wash on it’s legs which I really like. Every part of the figure is well painted and I can’t find any fault to it.
ARTICULATIONS – 9/10
Okay, let’s talk articulations on this figure. Being that this is a droid we could expect a fair amount of articulations from it. There’s a swivel at the legs, a hinge at the foot so that you could get it into those R2-D2 moves.
Of course there’s the rotation at the head whereby you could pop off the head if you want but I don’t think you’ll be doing that. R2-D2 has a third leg where you just push and it’ll pop out. Push it one more time and it’ll go back in again which I think is a good move by S.H. Figuarts instead of rotating the head to get the third leg out. You also pop out the blue flaps on it’s body to get the look where R2 was zapped by the Jawas in A New Hope.
Then there’s those two panels on the left and right where the tools pops out when the panels are opened. This is where we get to take those shots where R2-D2 zaps those Stormtroopers with these tools!
Last but not least we also get the option to change the color of the light at the front and back of it’s head. In order to do that, we just press one of the blue panel at the front of it’s head and for the back, we press one of the knobs on it’s head.
PRICE POINT – 8/10
The price point for the figure is around the $50 bracket, I got mine from a local supplier. At the time of writing this article, you can still find the figure up for sale at Mykombini. Last checked, Mykombini is selling it for $49 excluding shipping. So, head on over there if you want to get your hands on this R2D2.
OVERALL DESIGN – 10/10
So overall design, R2 gets a 10 out of 10 from me. I absolutely love this figure, from the color scheme, the paint apps right up to it’s articulations. I’m so glad that I chose this over the Black Series one which I think is a bit small and lacks the details as compared to this one. I definitely recommend this figure to all Star Wars figures collectors out there. I had a great time shooting it and getting it into all kinds of poses.
