Holy hell my fellow toy collectors and photographers, how insane has this year’s SDCC been for new toy reveals from all of our favorite plastic crack dealers? Hot Toys, Beast Kingdom, Hasbro, Mezco, Sideshow, and many other toy makers have shown off so many must-have upcoming collectibles that I fear I may finally get divorce papers served to me due to excessive spending on toys.
When asked if I could narrow all of the reveals down to my top three the process was more challenging than I expected, mostly due to the sheer volume of awesomeness shown off at the show. With that being said my top three list is a bit of a cop out, because I simply can’t just settle on three. Bigger is better, or so they say, so without further adieu I present to you my quasi-top-three SDCC toy reveals. There is no particular order, I want them all just as much as the next.
New Star Wars Black Series 6-inch Figures
So Hasbro simply knocked SDCC out of the park with all of its 6-inch Black Series reveals. Their new digital face painting technique has taken the look of these figures to the next level, and while Figuarts and Mafex 1/12 figures still look more detailed, you can’t underestimate the new quality of these Hasbro produced figures. $20 is a steal for the new sculpts, so kudos to Hasbro for the execution. Below you’ll find a sampling of my favorite new Black Series reveals.
Mezco One:12 Collective Thor: Ragnarok Line
I hate to admit that I don’t currently own a single One:12 Collective figure from Mezco, but that will change as soon as the newly revealed Thor: Ragnarok figures hit the market. Mezco showed off the new Gladiator Thor and Hulk figures, and they’re simply to die for. The details are amazing, the accessories and props are plentiful, and the cloth goods bring a sense of realism to each one. I’ve actually now pre-ordered a bunch of other One:12 Collective figures based on the looks of these two bad boys, so thanks Mezco for yet another toy line that I now must collect as if my life depended on it.
Beast Kingdom Egg Attack Line
Yes I’m cheating once again by not zeroing in on just one of the new Egg Attack figures that Beast Kingdom revealed at the show. Big deal, I like toys, a lot.
Anyway, I’m a huge fan of this line and just started collecting it in 2017, so I’ll definitely be adding the new reveals, which include figures from Thor: Ragnarok and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. These things are just too damn adorable, and they make for great photography subjects. I think I dig them so much because they mash the super deformed look of a Funko Pop, with the poseability of a Figuarts figure. Plus, they just look freaking radical.
