Its been a very busy week what with the latest news spilling out of New York from the Toy Fair and our starting down the road to Issue 3 and so we’ve taken a quick moment to return to our usual programming to continue our themed series. This series titled “Delusional” is by photographer Josiah Greer and see’s him re-visit scenes from the Star Wars universe that are underpinned with the deluded theme word.
The first image that came to my mind was that of the heartbreaking fall from grace of Anakin Skywalker. They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and this moment represents that exactly.
Many great toy photographers have a lab with a huge desktop or TV they can use for backgrounds, I’ve taken to using my laptop when I can to help complete an environment. Using some Jedi Padawan’s and a few chairs from the Jedi Council sets, coupled with the Coruscant skyline, I had a lot of fun recreating this terrible moment from Revenge of the Sith.
Moment of Triumph
This one comes courtesy of Grand Moff Tarkin. The ultimate delusion of grandeur, Tarkin is offered an escape from the Death Star in “A New Hope”, but declines stating, “Evacuate? In our moment of triumph? I think you over estimate their chances.” This shot found me with a lamp above Tarkin to his left to recreate the darkened room aboard the death star.
I don’t know why but this green uniformed Tarkin has always been my favourite version of him, this past winter I even got away with using him as a Christmas decoration amidst all my wife’s “real” ornaments…
Get Me Off This Rock
I came up with the idea for this shot after I realized that delusion might just be simple ignorant bliss. Here we see Luke Skywalker, everyone’s favorite moisture farmer.
He’s sick of life on Tattooine, and every night he watches those twin suns set, wondering what life might be like out past them. Little did he know that fate would pull him away from the nominal life he’d always known faster than you can say “womp-rat”.The hard part of this pic was finding lighting that lent itself to the dusk feel while not casting shadows that would be contrary to the ongoing sunset.
False Sense Of Security
As a Fetthead, I felt obliged to fit Boba in here somehow!
This shot was a challenge when it comes to depth and focus. I wanted the focus of the pic to stay on the Bothan who feels like he’s given all his pursuers the runaround, but needed Fett to be just barely out of focus enough to give the viewer that “ahhhh here comes trouble” reaction. A fun moment for this one was definitely recreating that classic cantina look with all kinds of aliens and misfits. Scum and villainy I believe is the term.
Too Late For Me, Son…
I’m a fan of full circle moments. So I figured if I was going to start with Anakin doing something terrible for the sake of love, there couldn’t be a better way to wrap this up than to have Vader/Anakin believe he’d strayed too far from the light to find redemption.
In some of my pics I like to go back to my childhood and use some (soon to be vintage) figs from my younger years. Here we have POTF (Power of the Force) Jedi Luke meeting with his father on Endor moments before being taken before the Emperor. Like I said earlier, I used my laptop for this one as a background to give the pic a more authentic feel.
Lastly, I want to give a huge thank you to the folks at Exclu for this opportunity and I look forward to doing again sometime!
A huge thank you to Josiah for compiling an incredible narrative throughout this themed series taking the time to explore some of the motifs that tie all these shots together.
